Book Reviews - The Beginning of Spring by Penelope Fitzgerald
A disappointing read. The book was chosen on the strength of its reviews and Penelope Fitzergerald's reputation. The original setting and plot made it an appealing selection.
We felt it did not develop the characters (none of whom were at all endearing!) and that the storyline was somewhat one-dimensional.
There were a few redeeming features such as the description of 'opening up' the house at the end of the winter and the portrayal of the desserted children on the railway platform, but these were few and far between and no-one in the group felt they would recommend the book to anyone!
