Not Just Desserts

Tunbridge Wells Book Club

Book Reviews - The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer

A charming read which everyone enjoyed. The portrayal of wartime occupied Guernsey was felt to be sensitive and accurate and it was a tribute to the author that she managed to portray such a bleak setting sensitively.

The style of the book was refreshing - the letters building up lovely character sketches and developing the storyline effectively.

We all felt the Oscar Wilde link was a little tenous and that the ending was somewhat contrived, but these were minor irritations in what we all agreed was a thought-provoking but enjoyable book.
