The group felt this was a well-planned, clever book which evoked a lot of empathy for the plight of the elderly Jacob.
The storyline was colourful and the characters imaginative. The portrayal of the bleak prospects of life in the American Depression and prohibition was striking and seemed well-researched.
The writing style was felt to be a little basic but on the whole, the group enjoyed the book for its refreshing subject-matter and variety.
